Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) is in a somewhat perfect scenario for a modern woman. That being having - a husband, a house and a successful career. However her initial desire for these things fades with time and she ends up finding herself lost, confused, and searching for what she really wanted in life.
She seeks a divorce and after this she sees herself at a crossroads point in her life. Gilbert steps out of her usual way of life to risk everything to change it. This leads her to going on a journey across the world that becomes a mission of discovering herself. On her travels, she discovers the pleasure of nourishment by dining in Italy; the power of prayer in India, and, finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace and balance of true love in Bali.
The Town is a new crime film starring Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Hall and Owen Burke and sees Affleck in his second pop at directing. It's set in a suburb of Boston called Charlestown and sees a couple of robbers who have a history of robbery heists planning a new heist which takes a drastic turn and leads them into realising they must leave Charlestown so they can avoid being in the grasp of "The Town".
The only family Doug (Ben Affleck) has are his partners in crime, especially Jem (Jeremy Renner), who, despite his dangerous, hair-trigger temper, is the closest thing Doug ever had to a brother. However, everything changed on the gang's last job when Jem briefly took a hostage: bank manager Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall). When they discover Claire lives in Charlestown, Jem gets nervous and wants to check out what she might have seen. Knowing what Jem is capable of, Doug takes charge. He seeks out Claire, who has no idea that their encounter is not by chance or that this charming stranger is one of the men who terrorized her only days before. As his relationship with Claire deepens into a passionate romance, Doug wants out of this life and the town. But with the Feds closing in and Jem questioning his loyalty, Doug realizes that getting out will not be easy and, worse, may put Claire in the line of fire. Any choices he once had have boiled down to one: betray his friends or lose the woman he loves. "The Town" is a dramatic thriller about robbers and cops, friendship and betrayal, love and hope, and escaping a past that has no future.
Nicholas Cage heads the cast in Jerry Bruckheimer's adaption of the Disney classic "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and it's definitely satisfactory if you're looking for a film with great visual effects and nice touches of magic, action and humour. The film sees three apprentices of wizard Merlin: Balthazar (Nicolas Cage), Horvath (Alfred Molina) and Veronica (Monica Bellucci), who are trying to protect Merlin and his dangerous spell from falling into the hands of the evil sorceress Morgana (Alice Krige).
Horvath turns against his aged master and helps Morgana steal the spell and kill Merlin. In the process of trying to fight off and capture Morgana, Veronica performs a “Soul Merging” spell to trap them together in one body. In the process, Veronica’s soul becomes entangled with Morgana’s and Balthazar has to trap them both in a nesting doll to protect the world from Morgana ever using The Rising spell.The standout performance for me was Toby Kebbel (Rocknrolla) as Drake Stone, Horvath’s apprentice. His young, flamboyant, cocksure magician was a mixture of Liberace, David Blaine and a mega-rock star all tossed together to create this über-magician full of wit. He was a joy to watch.
The Other Guys is one of the funnier films to see this summer and stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as 2 hapless cops forced to work together and follows the mishaps and adventure they go on as they follow the tail of a slimy English businessma, played by Steve Coogan. The film also sees Will Ferrell reunite with his long-time comic partner Adam McKay, director of Step Brothers, Anchorman and Talladega Nights.
Ferrell plays Allen Gamble, a bespectacled NYPD cop who’s never used a weapon and Wahlberg plays Terry Hoitz, a foul-mouthed hothead. The chance comes when two of their colleagues - ass-kicking, trigger-happy alpha warriors (entertainingly played by The Rock and Samuel L Jackson) whose Jerry Bruckheimer-esque car chases open the film and they suddenly and at great velocity come face-to-face with the sidewalk. It’s chaotic, knockabout stuff. Every good sight gag - a helicopter gets attacked by recreational golfers - is offset by an over-extended set-piece. Definitely one of the better films to see over the summer.
